The internal combustion engine comprises two injection valves (2a,2b), where each of the two injection valves is formed to carry out a partial lift or a full lift. A control unit (3) is provided to control the injection valves individually, such that the former injection valve is switched from partial lift to full lift, to carry out full lift, where the latter injection valve remains in partial lift. An independent claim is also included for a method for preventing contamination of injection valves of an internal combustion engine.
