Diffraction color pigment comprises a portion of arrays of spherical cavities with a substantially monodisperse size distribution for the optical properties. Independent claims are included for: (1) a preparation comprising at least one diffraction color pigment and at least one suitable carrier; (2) preparing a composition for topical application, comprising mixing at least a diffraction color pigment with at least one suitable carrier and optionally other ingredients; and (3) producing diffraction color pigment, comprising producing a three-dimensional packing of spheres, constructing the matrix around the sphere aggregates, removing the sphere aggregates and crushing the resulting shaped body to pigments.
