The method involves providing a main clutch (12) between a vehicle engine (11) and a manual transmission (13). A part of drive torque of the vehicle engine is transferred to a rear axle (23) of a motor vehicle. Another part of the drive torque is transferred to a front axle (31) by a wheel clutch (15). A desired clutch torque value of the wheel clutch is determined based on a pre-determined control strategy. An operating condition of the main clutch is provided, and the wheel clutch is controlled based on determined clutch torque value when the coupling impact risk criterion is fulfilled. An independent claim is also included for a device for controlling a wheel clutch in a drive train of a motor vehicle.
