The device (20) has a string retainer (35) for pressing vibrating strings (19) at and/or on a set of string contact surfaces of a rod (21) and attached to a guiding body and/or to the rod. The retainer is movable along a counter guiding body in a longitudinal direction together with the guiding body and/or the rod in an attached condition. The retainer is formed and attached such that another set of string contact surfaces of the retainer points in a direction opposite to another direction of the former set of string contact surfaces. An independent claim is also included for a method for continuously changing pitch of vibrating strings of a stringed musical instrument.
