The method involves sectionally or punctually monitoring covering paper strips (31, 32) over its entire breadth and/or at a predetermined position by an ultrasonic monitoring device (50) during conveyance of the strips into a gluing zone i.e. gluing device (60). The strips are provided with fire-resistant additives and metallic structures. Ultrasonic waves from a transmitter are directed on the strips, and are received by a receiver. Surface weight and/or surface density of the strips are determined by measured values received at the receiver. An independent claim is also included for a machine comprising a reel accommodating device.
