The chair has a seat (6) arranged on seat carrier parts (13, 14). A back rest (8) is fastened at rear region of the carrier parts. A spring element (35) damps pivoting motion of the back rest, and a counter-bearing (30) cooperates with the spring element that is made of elastic material. An adjusting device (34) changes damping of the pivoting motion of the backrest, where distance between the spring element and a pivoting axle (20) is changed by the adjusting device. The counter-bearing is provided at the carrier parts when the adjusting device is supported at one of the carrier parts.
