The apparatus (11) has a traction mechanism (13) designed as a rope drive. The mechanism includes a traction unit monitoring device (28) for monitoring break or tension drop of traction units (Z1, Z2) i.e. ropes (26a, 26b). The traction unit monitoring device includes mechanical blocking devices (150, 160), which are blocked when tension of one of the traction units is decreased. A load monitoring device (78) is provided for monitoring a motor drive assembly (49), where the load monitoring device is to be connected to the mechanism to drive a door leaf (18) upon exceedance of a load threshold.
