The method involves subjecting an internal combustion engine (1) in regulation operation while changing sequence of phases with a pre-determined greased air-fuel ratio and lean air-fuel ratio, where the air-fuel ratio averaged over the sequence is regulated during basic regulation at a reference value. The engine is arranged downstream in a direction of flow of exhaust gas from a lambda sensor (5) e.g. guidance sensor. Measured value for another lambda sensor (6) e.g. control sensor, is obtained, to determine the regulation of a control parameter used during basic regulation. The control parameter is considered as amplification factor.
