The device has two drive units (6.1, 6.2) comprising respective drivable wheel sets (14.1, 14.2). An internal combustion engine (2) i.e. diesel engine, stays in effective connection with one of drive units (6.1). An energy storage unit (4) stays in effective connection with the drive units. The energy storage unit is arranged for partially storing energy produced during braking of the driving units and/or energy produced by the combustion engine. Another drive unit (6.2) is supplied with energy by the energy storage unit and not by the internal combustion engine.
