The method involves removing a material from a test object (10) by a laser beam of an ophthalmological laser system (1), where the system has a treatment laser (2). A value of an optical characteristic of the test object is determined based on light reflected by the test object. The value of the optical characteristic is determined before the removal and another value of the optical characteristic is determined during the removal or after the removal. The system is calibrated in dependence of a difference between the values. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a computer program comprising a set of instructions to perform a method for calibrating an ophthalmological laser system (2) an ophthalmologic laser system.
