The method involves detecting and recognizing a speech signal of a user. The signal is analyzed to recognize an emotional state of the user. Tension, stress or relaxation is recognized as the emotional state. A parameter of a hearing device i.e. combined hearing and tinnitus masker device (1), is adjusted as a function of the recognized emotional state. Selection of a hearing program, volume control, frequency response and/or noise suppression of the hearing device is adjusted as a function of the recognized emotional state. The parameter is transferred from an initial value to a final value. An independent claim is also included for a hearing aid comprising a signal source.
