The method involves periodically magnetizing a soft magnetic core (1) surrounded by an excitation winding (2) using a preset excitation signal such that voltage distribution is induced in the winding. The distribution is changed by an effect of magnetic field to be measured, and sections of the distribution falsified by barkhausen noise are replaced by numerically generated sections. The distribution without the influence of the noise is demodulated to maintain a utilization signal that characteristics the magnetic field. The magnetic field is characterized based on the utilization signal. An independent claim is also included for an arrangement for measuring magnetic field comprising an excitation winding for surrounding a soft magnetic core.
