The arrangement (160) has a sensor element (110) i.e. lambda sensor, including a pumping cell (138) with solid electrolytes (118) connecting two electrodes (114, 116). The electrodes are connected with a measuring gas area (112) by respective connectors (166, 168) and supplied with gas from the area. The connectors are designed such that the pumping cell exhibits limit currents that are different in different pumping directions. A controller (162) operates the pumping cell in two different measuring ranges of a parameter i.e. lambda-value, of a gas in different pumping directions. An independent claim is also included for a method for detection of a portion of a gas component in a measuring gas area.
