The device has photovoltaic modules (1) arranged in a regular manner. Interconnection elements (Z1-Z6) are fixed between the photovoltaic modules adjacent to module corners such that the interconnection elements form a switching matrix between the photovoltaic modules, where the photovoltaic modules are switched in series and/or in a parallel manner. Parallel- and/or serial connection is modified. Each interconnection element includes a control unit for controlling electrical connection of the directly connected photovoltaic modules in response to a monitoring result. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a photovoltaic device.
