The laser ignition device (27) has a laser spark plug (26) with a laser-active solid body and an exit window for laser impulse (24), and a precombustion chamber. The precombustion chamber is limited by the exit window and has an opening to a combustion chamber (14) of an internal combustion engine (10). A volume ratio of the precombustion chamber to cylinder volume lies between certain ranges. The precombustion chamber has ball shape.
