The method involves determining common signal direction, and determining amplitude value of directional patterns (B1-B3) according to the signal direction. A pattern matching process is performed by linear regression to form a pair of values from the amplitude value of the common signal and the amplitude value of the directional pattern. The performed regression characterized quality value is determined, and the changed signal direction is determined. The optimal signal direction is identified based on maximum quality extreme value of the linear regression quality value. An independent claim is also included for a multibeam echosounder for acoustically measuring waterbody bed details of a soil structure and a sunken object.
