Determining the coloring of a granular or powdery substance, comprises placing the substance on a flatbed scanner, carrying out optical scanning of the substance and using the scanning result for the determination of color. Independent claims are also included for: (1) a device for carrying out the above mentioned method, comprising at least one flatbed scanner and a mold (11) in which the substance is placed, where the mold is made of a flat plate (12) and exhibits an aperture (13) perpendicular to its flat side. The dimensions of the aperture are such that the placed substance is held in the aperture; and (2) mold for receiving the granular or powdery substance, and to measure the coloring of the substances with a flatbed scanner, where the mold exhibits a size such that the substance placed on the plate is held by scraping the plate in the aperture.
