The system has a sensor control module and spacer sensors (5) provided at a rear bumper of a motor vehicle (1). A data connection unit between the sensor control module and the spacer sensors is connected to a connection socket of a connector plugging device (6) in a coupled trailer. The connection socket of the connector plugging device is controlled such that automatic switching of vehicle-lateral spacer sensors to trailer spacer sensors (7) is provided by the connector plugging device. An independent claim is also included for a method for utilizing a parking assistance system.
