The damper has a hollow cylindrical housing (1) guiding a piston, and a fastening lug (3) connected with the housing by a weld flange structure (2). A protective cap (5) is detachably fastened to the damper, and covers a sub region of the lug and the housing. A protective wall section of the cap is supported by a U-shaped clamp with an elastically pivotable arm. The wall section and the clamp are integrally formed from a plastic material. The clamp projects from an inner wall of the protective wall section. The clamp stays perpendicular in a plane on a cylindrical axis of a hollow cylinder.
