The separator (1) has an input part for receiving sheet material stacks. A separating element (11) of a rotatory extraction device (10) periodically detects the sheet material stacks to be separated, and is conveyed in a transport direction. A restraining apparatus (20) cooperates with the separating element to prevent separation of more than one piece of the sheet material stacks. The separating element performs periodic separation of the sheet material stacks after two or more rotations of the rotatory extraction device.
