The method involves detecting an operating temperature of an electrical machine e.g. generator, depending on current flows (25) through a stator winding (15) of the machine that is cooled by an air stream generated by blowers. A rotation of axial blowers (29) i.e. axial ventilator, is regulated and/or controlled depending on the detected operating temperature of the electrical machine. A temperature at the stator winding and a cooling body (21) of the electrical machine is detected as the operating temperature that is detected by a sensor (31) fastened to a machine housing. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a device for cooling an electrical machine, comprising an axial ventilator (2) a controller for performing a method for cooling an electrical machine.
