The method involves determining a perspective position for recording an intraoperative two dimensional (2D) image of an organ of a patient (44), and intraoperative recording of the 2D image by an x-ray device (12). A target position of an x-ray source (36) is calculated such that the organ is illuminated from the determined perspective position by comparing the 2D image with a three dimensional (3D) image based on a geometrical ratio obtained by projecting the organ at an x-ray detector (38). The source is moved to the calculated target position, and the 2D image of the organ is recorded. An independent claim is also included for an x-ray system comprising an x-ray detector commonly movable with an x-ray source.
