The method involves receiving signals from a sensor unit (2) by an evaluation unit, and displacing a grid component (3) with a grid (6) and a light emitter of an emitter component (4) during deformation of an energy absorption element (1). An optical path of light beam, which strikes on a detector of a detector component (5), is interrupted during displacement of the grid or the light emitter in an alternating manner. Resulting light pulses are detected and are transferred as a lateral modulated signal to the evaluation unit. An independent claim is also included for a motor vehicle comprising a sensor unit for detecting deformations of an energy absorption element.
