The method involves assigning a high switching speed (1) to a gear of an automatic transmission of a drive unit of a motor vehicle. An upshift is executed in a higher gear of the transmission when actual speed (3) of the drive motor reaches the high switching speed, and actual acceleration (7) of the vehicle is determined.
