The component has a switching arrangement (10) provided with a set of photovoltaic elements (12) e.g. thin film cells, and a sensor device e.g. microsensor (14), assigned to each photovoltaic element. An operating parameter of the respective photovoltaic element is measurable by the sensor device. Control signals are generated for changing an operating condition of the respective photovoltaic element by a control device designed for receiving measured operating parameter values depending on the measured operating parameter values. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a motor vehicle component.
