The method involves pressing surface structures of a three-dimensional surface into thick, relatively-soft material e.g. foam material (60). Penetration depths of profiles (61) of the surface structures are measured at points in such a manner that pressure transferred by the soft material is delivered to a sensor surface that is arranged opposite to the profiles. The sensor surface is provided with printed circuit boards (64), where characteristics of the soft material are changed during penetration of the surface structure into the soft material. An independent claim is also included for an arrangement for detecting a three-dimensional surface and a relief.
