The device has a sensor that detects measured variables, where the device stays in contact with an operation of a thermostat, determines a course of a parameter in dependence of time, and determines courses of a model size (102) in dependence of the time by models. The model size copies parameter size (101). The operation of the thermostat is evaluated on a basis of a surface balance (103) between the courses of the parameter size and the model size. The models refer to minimal warm of coolant. An independent claim is also included for a method for checking a device of a motor car.
