The method involves assigning a validity period to a franking memo (101), and producing or detecting an identifier of the franking memo in a server device. The server device marks the franking memo in a valid manner under application of the identifier in a franking data bank, after the course of the validity period. The data bank is utilized for verification of validity of the franking memo. A payment process is implemented regarding a difference between an original postage value and modified postage value based on acknowledgement of the modified postage value. An independent claim is also included for a system for verifying validity of a franking memo of a shipping customer.
