The method involves vertically shifting cleaning level during operation of a combustion plant and accomplishing the quantity of the cleaning water, where quantity of the cleaning water is kept so small that no cleaning water arrives into a funnel of the empty courses (1). The water drops leave in the level of the portions to be cleaned in a spraying angle of a nozzle (2). An independent claim is also included for a device for on-line cleaning of portions of vertical empty courses of combustion plant.
