The method involves indirectly determining an exhaust gas value of combustion of a fuel-air-mixture during discontinuous operation by a boiler-isothermal current and/or voltage characteristic curve of ionized flame of a burner. A boiler system is operated between maintenance operations in an optimal operating range of the burner by the constant, indirectly determined exhaust gas value. A defined signal for maintenance and repair needs of the boiler system is triggered by the burner with deviations of predetermined values, which are not readjusted.
