The method involves determining concentrations for two groups with organic samples in an analysis process that is implemented with water sample, where the concentrations are evaluated for determination of biological oxygen demand (BOD)-values. Chromatographic and/or mass spectrographic procedures and group-specific detectors such as coated micro balances, are utilized within framework of the analysis process. Sum of the concentrations weighted by a group-specific effectiveness factor is formed for determination of the BOD-values. An independent claim is also included for a device for determining value of biological oxygen demand.
