The method involves connecting an internal combustion engine (2) and an electrical drive device (15) with a transmission (4) such that torque is transferred from the electrical drive device and/or the engine to a drive axle (14) of a motor vehicle and torque is transferred from the drive axle to the electrical drive device and/or the engine, where the vehicle is driven downhill and braked. The transmission is switched if no delay of the vehicle occurs at maximum recuperation moment such that the drive axle is connected with the drive device by smaller translation of the transmission.
