The system (4a) has a starter battery (5) i.e. high current-lead-acid-battery, for supplying current to a starter (13) of a motor vehicle. A main power supply battery (6) i.e. lithium-ion-battery, is provided for supplying current to an electrical consumer connected to a main power supply (7) of the motor vehicle. The starter battery is coupled with the main power supply over a switch (15) that is controlled by an energy management control device (10). The starter battery is decoupled from the main power supply during a starting process of the motor vehicle. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a battery system of a motor vehicle.
