The method involves detecting an image of a detection area (13) as a brightness control image from a spatially resolving detector (7) e.g. scanning camera, where the image is produced by imaging. An illumination and/or mapping geometry is selected in such a manner that mapping of the area sectionally takes place by bright field illumination and dark-field illumination of the area, where the control image comprises bright and dark field areas defined together in a threshold range. A determination is made to check whether surface defect lies at the detection area, by analyzing the range. An independent claim is also included for an arrangement for testing a surface of a bearing component.
