The device i.e. fingerprint scanner (1), has a transparent contact window (10) comprising a contact surface (11) for laying up a hand or its parts i.e. fingers, in a contact region (12), where thickness of the contact window is about 12 mm. An illumination device (2) illuminates the contact region, and a detector (3) detects light from the contact region. The contact surface has a light dispersive structure with surface roughness of greater than 1000 nanometers in the contact region. A lens (31) is provided between the contact window and the detector.
