The method for joining first component (10) from a titanium-aluminum alloy such as a turbine wheel for a turbocharger with a second component (20) from a steel alloy such as a turbine shaft for the turbocharger, comprises welding the components indirectly over an intermediate element (16) from a nickel-base alloy. The intermediate element is welded first by friction welding with the first component and is welded subsequently by friction- or beam welding with the second component, where the intermediate element is welded first by the friction- or beam welding with the second component. The method for joining first component (10) from a titanium-aluminum alloy such as a turbine wheel for a turbocharger with a second component (20) from a steel alloy such as a turbine shaft for the turbocharger, comprises welding the components indirectly over an intermediate element (16) from a nickel-base alloy. The intermediate element is welded first by friction welding with the first component and is welded subsequently by friction- or beam welding with the second component, where the intermediate element is welded first by the friction- or beam welding with the second component and is welded subsequently by the friction welding with the first component. The intermediate element is used with a positive pre-setting tool in which the friction welding interferes a device for transmitting torque. Independent claims are included for (1) an intermediate element for indirectly joining the components; and (2) a welding compound.
