The covering device has a length-adjustable protective cover movable along an axis (X) and a coupling mechanism, which has a fixed coupling element (2) not movable with the protection cover (1). Another coupling element (3) is movable with the protection cover. A movable actuating element (4) is provided for producing or termination of coupling. The actuating element is so arranged that it produces the engagement or termination of coupling of both coupling elements by moving along a trajectory not coinciding with the axis when the protection cover is found in an engagement position. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a covering device.
