The method involves providing an area between roll stands (2, 3) arranged in series, and setting a suction channel (8) above bands (6) emerging from the roll stands. The suction channel is guided into an outlet guide section (12) for the bands and arranged at an outlet side at one of the roll stands. The suction channel is attached to a suction device. Air sucked against a roll direction is bypassed before entering into the suction channel such that air stream contacting a surface of the bands at increased speed. A horizontal flow roller (13) is produced between the bands and the channel. An independent claim is also included for a device for discharging of contaminated air, smoke and dust from an outlet guide section of a roll stand.
