The motor vehicle has a steering (1) with a servo unit for providing a steering assistance and a locking device (14) for locking the steering. A unit (22) is provided in the steering for checking the locking condition of the steering. The unit is configured to check during switching of the ignition of the motor vehicle, whether the steering is in a locked or unlocked condition. A normal use of the motor vehicle is prevented during detection of an unlocked condition. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a motor vehicle.
