The method involves triggering the regeneration by setting a reduced effective exhaust gas atmosphere before a storage catalyst. An exhaust gas flow parameter in the form of an exhaust gas velocity, an exhaust gas flow or an exhaust gas volume flow or a temperature parameter is determined during the regeneration. The temperature parameter is controlled in an exhaust system. A length of time period is predetermined as a function of the temperature parameter and the exhaust gas flow parameter. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a control unit with a computer program for controlling the regeneration of a storage catalyst; and (2) a computer program product with a computer program in a machine-readable form.
