The method involves carrying discontinuous adaptation process by reducing a filling level of a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalyst according to detected overdose of a reducing agent when deviation between nitrogen oxide values (22) is higher than a determined threshold. The nitrogen oxide values are compared with a nitrogen oxide modeled value (23). Proportioning of the reducing agent is reduced when the nitrogen oxide values are lower than the modeled value. The proportioning of the reducing agent is increased when the nitrogen oxide values are greater than the modeled value. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a computer program having a set of instructions for executing a selective catalytic reduction catalyst managing method (2) a computer program product having code programs for executing a selective catalytic reduction catalyst managing method.
