The device has a retention device holding a printed paper sheet at a front edge, and another retention device arranged downstream in a conveying direction of the sheet. The latter retention device grips the sheet in contact-less manner such that holding force is exerted on the sheet by pneumatic low pressure. Another force that is directed against suction force is exerted on the sheet such that the sheet is maintained at distance to a surface of the latter retention device. The latter force is generated by the effect of sound levitation via a vibrator. The vibrator is designed as an ultrasonic transducer, piezo-film, piezo-element, magneto-resistive material film, electrical resistive material film and metal or plastic sheets.
