The method involves transporting a printed paper sheet (8) by a gripper system (9). The sheet is released from the system in an area of a paper sheet deliverer stack. Suction force is produced by a suction device in a sheet brake (1). Force (6) that is directed against suction force (7) is exerted on the sheet so that the sheet is maintained at distance to a surface of the brake. The force is generated by the effect of sound levitation via a vibrator (3), which is designed as an ultrasonic transducer, piezo-film, magneto- or electrical resistive material films, metal or plastic sheets. An independent claim is also included for a device for slowing down the printed paper sheet.
