Particulate, water-, nutrients- and microorganisms absorbing carbon based storage material with enhanced specific surface, comprises organic and/or inorganic additives. The inorganic carbon component is produced by thermally treating coal, natural and/or synthetically prepared organic compounds under the exclusion of oxygen at high temperatures. The storage material reversibly absorbs aqueous liquids and organic and/or inorganic substances dissolved in it, and release them again. An independent claim is also included for soil or a plant substrate, where the carbon based storage material is incorporated into the soil or into the substrate, preferably mixed with the soil or the substrate, and the carbon based storage material is used in a portion of 0.1-90 wt.%, preferably 0.1-20 wt.%, based on the plant substrate to be produced.
