The device has a distance sensor (11) arranged at a rack feeder, by which a shelf allocation monitoring and a distance monitoring are executed relative to a component of the high bay racking. Discrete target-distance values are checked for controlling the allocation of storage space by the distance sensor. The positions of pallets are monitored by the distance sensor. The distance sensor has a transmitter (2) emitting transmitting light rays and a receiver (5) receiving receiver light rays.
