The method involves irradiating a bearing component (1) with an optical pattern (13). The optical pattern is shaded area by area by the component so that the optical pattern comprises a shaded zone (18) and an illuminated zone (19) in a light direction behind the component. The shaded zone and/or the illuminated zone are measured with a spatial resolution detector (17) to produce a measurement value. A correction value is determined based on misorientation of the component relative to a reference direction. Dimension e.g. diameter (d), of the component is determined from the values. An independent claim is also included for a device for measuring a bearing component.
