The method involves sub-classifying a variable (9) into a data area, and coding of an operation mode provided by a system co-ordinator (7) of a control device (1). The variable is transferred to multiple sub controls (11) and global controls (33) of the control device. One of the sub controls is addressed by the data area of the variable. An internal combustion engine (3) is controlled by the addressed global control based on another data area, where the internal combustion engine is controlled by the control device. An independent claim is also included for a motor vehicle comprising a control device.
