The method involves detecting a reconnaissance frequency range in a sequence of signal snapshots of certain bandwidth within a given detection duration by a signal direction finder. The time resolution achieved by the sequence of the signal snapshots within the same frequency band is selected depending on the expected signal duration. The received signals are stored in a memory (MEM). The time is reset according to acquisition of the signals in the memory to detect the beginning of the signal, where historical samples are read parallel to storage of current samples during the time resetting.
