The method involves lifting a load point of an internal combustion engine in generator mode by operating an electric machine and lowering in motor mode. Multiple theoretically possible load point displacements are assigned to an operational state depending on a load point displacement cost and a load point displacement benefit. The load point displacement is determined depending on the instantaneous operating point of the internal combustion engine.
