Layer switchable to hydrophilic or hydrophobic to an external stimulus in a reversible manner comprises core-sheath-particles with (a) a core having an average particle size of 0.1-10 mu m and (b) a sheath of triblock-copolymer A (hydrophilic)-B (anchor)-C (hydrophobic), where (i) block B is bonded to the core by a covalent bond, (ii) the particles of the layer are at least partially crosslinked with each other, (iii) the layer on a silicon-wafer-surface has a contact angle theta aof less than or greater than 90[deg] and (iv) the layer is physically or chemically connected to a substrate. Layer switchable to hydrophilic or hydrophobic to an external stimulus in a reversible manner, comprises core-sheath-particles with (a) a core having an average particle size of 0.1-10 mu m and (b) a sheath of triblock copolymer A-B-C comprising a hydrophilic block A, a hydrophobic block C and an anchor block B, in which the monomers forming the respective blocks A, B and C are different from each other, where (i) the anchor block B is bonded to the core by at least one covalent bond, (ii) the particles of the layer are at least partially crosslinked with each other chemically, (iii) the layer on a silicon-wafer-surface has a contact angle theta aof less than or greater than 90[deg] after the treatment of each layer at an elevated temperature of greater than 10[deg] C with water and with toluene or cyclohexane respectively, (iv) the layer is physically or chemically connected to a substrate and (v) the layer is permanent, where the permanent layer exhibits a value of = 1 in the cross-cut test according to ISO EN 2409and/or an abrasion resistance value of at least 60000 abrasion cycles, based on Martindale according to DIN EN ISO 12947(part 2). Independent claims are also included for: (1) a coated substrate comprising at least one physically or chemically stable layer bonded to the substrate; (2) producing the layer, comprising (a) providing a particulate core, (b) using the triblock-copolymer A-B-C as sheath comprising a hydrophilic block A, a hydrophobic block C and an anchor block B, which is covalently bound to the core by means of the anchor block B, and (c) at least partially crosslinking the core-sheath-particles with each other; and (3) producing a substrate coated with the layer, comprising (a) providing a particulate core, (b) using a triblock-copolymer A-B-C as sheath comprising a hydrophilic block A, a hydrophobic block C and an anchor block B, which is covalently bound to the core by means of the anchor block B, (c) applying the core-sheath-particles made of a water dispersion on the surface of a suitable substrate, and (d) binding the core-sheath-particles on the surface of the substrate chemically and/or physically and at least partially crosslinking the core-sheath-particles with each other.
